hi all;i hope you are well;like most sax players i,m searching for the best mpc, lig, reed combination.Well,i finally got there.I,m not being boastful just trying to be helpful;lol the mpc is a rico royal graftonite a3.any lig as long as it fits properly(all produce the same tone imo).now the reed after many years of trial is a vandoran java red 1.5(yes a 1.5).Only now am i able to get front fork high e and f easily.before the e was no brainer.altissimo notes pop out easily, low b and b flat pop out easily. but the whole range of my alto is perfectly in tune.i cant believe it.For me the amazing discovery for me is the java red 1.5 reed. AWESOME.Please try them, you can buy one offa e bay for £3 with free postage.Let me know what you think of them;i,m thinking holy grail here.I dont work for vandoran lol. regards mally

I've got to give that a try sounds like a very reasonably priced combo, you make it sound wonderful, wonder if it will work for me,I've been thinking of having a try of a graftonite for a while and wasn't sure which one to go for ...John

You might be better with the Bari Esprit II on alto John.

Here we go................and they're off

hi john from mally.i found the rico a3 has a bit of resistance but with the java red 1.5,very easy blowing in all registers.

Hi,
I use Vandoren Java Red 1.0 ! On tenor sax, with Otto Link NY 8*. In addition I just switch to the double embouchure - no more teeth on the mouthpiece. I am quite happy with it.

Huh. I never heard of a Rico mouthpiece. I play my bari sax with a 3 or 3 1/2 reed from vandoren. I find that if you drop down two reed sizes, it's easier to play, but you don't get a good sound in general. I find the size 3 reeds to work perfectly. Are you a beginner? If you are, I would use the 1 1/2, but probably a 2. That's my opinion on this topic.

Rico do the graftonite and the metalite. The metalite has a high baffle and gives quite a distinctive sound on Baritone and is relativley inexpensive.
