Mouthpieces Should I struggle on a new mouthpiece??

So, I have been shopping around for a mouth piece and have tried out a few ( Judy Jazz and Otto link non metal) and all of them I hate!! The sound is very muffled and it is just very hard to play on, I don't think this is normal. Please help!-Mark E. Mark

It is really hard to comment without more information. Are you aware that going to a mouthpiece with a more open tip takes a softer reed? If you try to use the same strength reeds that you use on your "closed tip" entry level mouthpiece they will be too hard to blow and will produce a "stuffy" or "muffled" sound.

Who is Judy Jazz - Jody's mother? My Jody Jazz Jet 6 is certainly not muffled - it's one of the better hard rubber (it's actually some sort of space-age polymer) mouthpieces I have played on in a long time...a cracking mouthpiece...

More information would be good idea...is it for an alto, tenor, baritone...what reeds you are using, ligature...

I use a standard metal ligature, and I currently use a selmer c* Tenor mouth piece, the mouth piece I bought on ebay is a Otto Link Tone Edge 6*, I use a Vandoren 3 reed

I have an Otto Link Tone Edge 6* and it's not overly open about 95 thou. if I remember correctly. You could try a Vandoren 2 1/2 strength reed and see how that works out or what condition is your sax in - no leaks or any other problems? Or maybe your not a Jody Jazz or Otto Link person - certain mouthpieces just don't work for me - Eugene Rousseau Studio Jazz 4 tenor comes to mind for me...

Happy honkin'

The best mouthpiece to play is one that is effortless and requires minimal input.

The shape and length of American mouthpieces is different to French mouthpieces and so a different reed in a different strength is needed for a similar tip opening.

A Link will prefer an american cut reed. A Selmer Paris, will prefer a French filed reed. Vandoren classic blue is french filed. Try a Vandoren Juno or rico orange box on the link. A Vandoren Classic blue 3 which is playing fine on a Selmer S80 in a C* lay will feel like a plank on a Link 6*.

Order some 2 and 2.5 Rico orange or Vandoren Juno. They do 3 packs on ebay or even singles.

Some players have such developed chops they can blow anything and overpower problems to get that certain sound.

If I understand your perception of stuffy correctly, it can be avoided.
Can you give us an example of a player that you like who does not sound stuffy?
If you can that would help even though 'same mouthpiece/reed as idol does not equal same sound'.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
