Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site and looking for advice.

I played Alto Sax for about 4 years in school, and stopped about 15 years ago. I have now decided to take it up again.
As expected, I don't know what to get. I am looking at the Trevor James Classic II. That is at the upper range of my budget and it seems to be well liked by multiple people.

I'm just wondering if anyone has heard of the Hire to Buy scheme through Sax.co.uk. From what I can tell it looks like a great deal, but somethings can be to good to be true.

If anyone can give me any advice on the saxophone or the scheme, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jonny.

Sax..co.uk is a very trustworthy dealer. I bought my first alto sax there. However, there only a limited number of options for hire-purchase. You may want to check uksaxhire, a shop based in Buxton Peak District, there a wide range of options for hire-purchase. As to Alto sax, I personally like Yamaha YAS 280. Just to say that I am new learners too. Goo luck with your hunting

Thanks,
That's great. I'll get on to that site now and have a look. I was a little disappointed that they only had 3 altos. I had googled for other places that do hire purchases but only found them.
Much appreciated.

Thanks for that.
I've had a look through and I don't think it's for me. Firstly, I don't want or need a really expensive one, and secondly I like the idea of owning it after 18 months with no large payments at the end to buy it.

Thank you though. I do appreciate your help.

Sax.co.uk is a good company, but I don’t know how their rental scheme compares with others,

Lots of people play Trevor James saxophones. They are a respected brand.

Thank you. A bit of reassurance goes a long way. I think I just needed one person to say "yep, all good".
I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake.

Well, Sax.co.uk aren't sending out hire saxophones at the moment. I completely understand why. But I'm still really disappointed. I got my hopes up to early. For some reason it didn't even cross my mind that they wouldn't be operating as usual.

Hi Jonny, what's your budget? Are you only looking to hire/buy a brand new sax?
There may be one of us with what you want 2nd hand/via post/much cheaper than new.
What make/model did you play before?
Have you looked at the TJ "The Horn" also?
Additionally, @Jericho Saxophones are well regarded by many including @Stephen Howard
I have one of their original altos (not for sale) and prefer it to the new TJ Raw I bought... and sold.
The new ones are slightly revised, for the better, I understand: Jericho Saxophones | Student Alto Saxophone

Hi David.
If I was to buy one out right, I couldn't afford much. Probably around the £200-£250 area. But monthly up to £40. I like the idea of the Hire Purchases schemes, as I could get (and own) a much better one, now, instead of having to wait 18+ months.

I'm open to the idea of a second hand one. But again, it depends on what they cost. Also, I'd be a little bit cautious about a second hand one, unless it came with a decent guarantee.

Thanks for your help. If you know of anywhere who might be able to help with this, I'd appreciate their help!

Jonny, where in England are you? The biggest problem right now is being able to buy one, a good one, remotely, have it delivered, and wait 7-14 days for it to become safe to handle/play.
NB. Do your own research on Coronavirus lifespan on metal, fabric, etc.

UKSaxHire have altos for hire from about £10 per month upwards.

I live in South Cumbria. In the middle of nowhere.
I guess I'll be waiting a few months before I actually get to start..

Also, I believe Jericho still offer their 10% discount to Cafe members, but I don't know if they're still shipping at present. So you buy one new under £250, play it for a while, then sell it for £200. The old ones still sell well when they come up for sale at this price. You've lost around one month's rental money but have something to play now.
Also, check their return policy here: Refunds and Returns | Jericho Saxophones

Great minds... I just found that too. Richard has ex-rental TJ Classic II at £10/mth or brand new at £19/mth. You can buy or upgrade too. And he's still sending them out. ukSaxHire
Problem solved! :)
Give then a call, but also do your own research as I've not had any experience with them. Have you @nigeld ?

I have no personal experience of UKSaxHire, but a couple of years ago there were a couple of Café members who gave positive reports.

I guess I could get one for a few months, then return when the rent to buy starts up again.
The buy price at the end of the year is still quite a lot. So I still wouldn't be able to afford it through them.
But I really do that idea of renting a yamaha for a few months.
I'll call them tomorrow.
Thanks folks!

Make sure you keep us posted as to how your return to playing is going.

Best of luck with it.

FYI, my only contribution, as I am not in the UK:

Here's the search that will find all references to them here, including this post:
