Perhaps because I'm tired but I don't think one jumped out as significantly different to me either on speakers or headphones.

Might listen again tomorrow.
NIce cup of Horlicks, Dearie, and a good night's rest will do wonders

I was surprised how good the cheap one was.

I did. Luckily there are always new products on the market.
Coming from a concert, last week in which Bob Sheppard was amplified with the worse SM58 on earth, by the second worse sound engineer on earth. @David Roach was there too.

I was indeed. The sound quality totally ruined my enjoyment of four extraordinary players (although the bass player could have played half the notes he did and the keyboard player could get his head out of the 70s).
I had to listen in a very peculiar way, trying to fill in the gaps of Peter Erskin's drum fills that just sort of disappeared due to bad mic positions, and trying desperately to remember what Bob Shepard really sounds like despite the cheese-grater effect of the system, trying to block out the bass player's over playing and wincing at the volume of the top of the synth/piano. A wholly unsatisfactory and exhausting gig. Makes me wonder what the Nyman Band has sounded like at times....no, it's too depressing...

THAT'S why you're not sleeping well

Mrs Ivan swears by a vile hot bedtime drink called 'barley cup'
Not heard of that, it was a late night that disturbed my sleep pattern, I rarely lie in.... :)

Even if the 55 has the same capsule, that does not mean it has the same sound of course. The housing of the capsule, it's dimensions and geometry could have just as much bearing on the sound.

Same capsule in different mic bodies can sound very different.

5 years late to this party but B: Oktave Ribbon ML-53 is without doubt my favourite mic. It's interesting that I'm in the minority.
