Microphones sax mic question?

Hi guys! I have a question regarding the PRO 35 clip on instrument mic. Will this mic work well with the Zoom H4N digital recorder?

Will a zoom give phantom power ( i suspect not)- if your zoom can't power the mic, this isn't really a goer. The built in mics on a zoom are very good- I don't think you're likely to be compromising yourself by using the on-boards.....

the Zoom H4N has built in stereo mics which would be quite decent for recording sax, it also provides 48v or 24v phantom power which would be adequate for the Audio Technica PRO 35 which will run on 12 - 52 volts - http://eu.audio-technica.com/en/resources/5c5ec8db3998444c_pro35_ss_e.pdf
the Pro35 is a mono mic, so you'd have to set the Zoom to record in mono, or you'd only get the recording on one channel of the stereo. Also, I gather that the record level control on the Zoom comes after the input preamp, so a really loud signal, such as you might get from a clip on electret condenser mic on the bell of a sax, might overload the preamp and cause distortion.
Clipping a mic to the bell isn't always the best position for a mic, but it depends how bright you like it to sound

thanks for your input! how do these clip on mics work properly? like where does it connect to after linking it to the belt pack?

I have a friend who is a freelance pro journalist (and musician) and he has a digital recorder which he uses with a separate handheld microphone which gives excellent professional quality recordings. It is his away-from- the-studio recording tool for radio interviews - as well as some high quality music recordings which I have heard.

I'm pretty sure he told me it was only around £100 for the recorder (microphone a separate purchase, I think). But the onboard mike is excellent, too.

I'll be speaking to him sometime soon and I'll ask for details.
