Hello! I found two used Alto Saxophones in a very good condition, so please I need an advice about what to buy in between Trevor J. James Revolution and Stagg 77 SA.

I was Member of a Municipality Band for 7 years, taking part in a number of cultural events by playing alto saxophone but the music that I want to play is inspired by New Wave and Dark Wave style.

Thank you in advance!

Best Wishes,

Katerina

Hi Katerina, welcome
Please introduce yourself in the doorbell section.

I haven't seen a Stagg sax, but we had one of their clarinettes. It wasn't very good.

The TJ saxes have a good reputation. But unless you're buying from a music shop, budget for a setup to get it playing properly.

Suggest you play it before buying... And good luck!

Thank you both very much..

I visited today the site that I found these two saxophones and the TJ was sold..

Although I need a saxophone with nice sound, my budget is low (around 350 euros) so I have realised that propably I will find a not so good..

Just now I find a used one John Packer 041 (270 euros).. may I kindly asking you what's your opinion about that?

Music Cornwall (due to close due to mismanagement) got its brass instruments from Packer ( bought when it was Cornwall Music Service, before the mismanagement team arrived) - but don't know if they did the same with saxophones.

I know that Packer's supplied some French Horns (I think...) that had problems and were recalled. But CMS had a good experience with Packers.

The cases are poor, though - the zips always go, and the straps can also give problems.

Kev's point - that any privately bought sax is liable to need setting up - is a good one. You will either have to budget for it, or exploit some of your Municipality Band contacts, or do it yourself...

Mind you, one hears from time to time of shops which send instruments out which aren't set up properly....

My first sax was the Stagg SA77 which my kids bought for me as a Christmas present 🙂
It is very much a budget sax with clunky keys but the build quality is good as in the 18 months i used it as my only sax, nothing went wrong with it.
I was using mine everyday for practice, i even stayed with the original mpc for over 12months.
The lacquer has came off in places, mainly around the neck and octave key.
I still have mine and occasionally play it from time to time, it still plays fine but obviously can tell the quality between my Hanson & my R&C compared to the Stagg.
