Very early infact..

While on the lookout for a 2nd sax, I came across a 2nd hand "Cannonball" Big Bell Stone Series tenor. This a link to there site http://www.cannonballmusic.co.uk/ss_tenors.php The colour of mine is Raven..

First impressions are pretty good, it's quite free blowing and loud, intonations good. Will post some sound clips in a couple of days as well as some more comments..

Chris..

Steve Howard certainly thinks highly of Cannonballs in his review here: http://www.shwoodwind.co.uk/Reviews/Saxes/Tenor/cannonball_trio.htm

How did you find a 2nd hand one - was that a private sale, as I couldn't see anything about 2nd hand saxes on the Cannonball UK website ?

I believe that Cannonball saxes are closely related to Bauhaus M2S - I love my M2S tenor and alto and the neck is interchangeable with a Cannonball tenor neck that I bought.

On the Bauhaus tenor, I find it has a big sound with a fluffy edge to it. A bright, high-baffle mouthpiece complements it well. Mouthpieces like Link STM don't seem to have as much bite on the M2S as they do on a Selmer.

What mouthpiece are you using on your Cannonball ?

Rhys

PS I just re-read Steve's review of the Cannonball tenor and he says "There aren't many tenors on the market these days that lean towards the warm...in fact I can think of just one other from the same region, and that's the Bauhaus M2 Studio. In a side-by-side play-off I found it remarkably difficult to distinguish between the two horns, as did a couple of listeners.
With a bit more playing and a lot more listening I'd say that the VR had a tad more edge than the Bauhaus, but to put that into perspective I'd say it was about as much as the difference I'd expect to find on any two seemingly identical horns."

Rhys, I think Chris inserted the link just to show us the sax in question, not that he purchased it from Cannonball.

I quite like the look of the Vintage Reborn series...

Congrats Chris,enjoy your new horn.
Never owned a Cannonball but tried a few last time i was in Dawkes, very nice horns.
Nearly bought the Gerald Albright alto version at Music live show at the NEC about 4/5 years ago, tried it,then went to have a little lunch to think about it,then went back to buy it and someone had beaten me to it.

I took mine (also a Raven, frosted nickel body and polished nickel keys) into a local music shop yesterday for a check and adjust and the girl behind the counter looked into the case and called the rest of the staff over to look "the beautiful sax"! I told them that when assembled with its frosted silver neck and gold Brancher mp, it looked like the gift table at a gipsy wedding (or indeed any other wedding, not exclusively one involved the travelling community 🙂) - which may or may not be a good thing depending on your taste........

Enjoy, I certainly enjoy mine.

PS - if it's not an impertinent question, how much did you pay for yours? Mine was about £1200, bought from a reputable dealer 6 months old and barely played 3 years ago. They come up so infrequently and the RRP is so difficult to establish that it's impossible to know whether that was a good price or not.

OK Guys as promised a soundclip of the new tenor, DeadAudiolink Removed
Just the first 30 bars of "I Remember Clifford" no drums no piano just a Bass for accompaniment..No edit's, no EQ,
just as recorded. Btw the mouthpiece is a Selmer Soloist and the reed is a Vandoren Jazz 2.5..

Very nice sound man! Looks like you found a good match in that Cannonball(too bad you can't play it at a public pool)
