Accessories Replacement mouthpiece patches - where to buy?

My Student Tenor Windcraft MP came with a rubber patch fitted and I'm preferring the feel of this to my naked Yam 4c, plus it's protecting it from teeth marks.

Where's best (combining quality and price) to buy these patches so I can put them on all my MPs?
Is there a negative to using a patch compared to a bare MP?

Thanks for any help.

PS. TomMapfumo - Just bought the Tenor Etude. Let you know how it goes....

🙂

I would think any music store should stock these and most definitely any speciality wind instrument store.

The ones I use in this part of the world is Reeds Australia mouthpiece patches - packet contains two for about 10 bucks NZ approx five squid. Nice and comfortable and last a long time (over 10 years on a Meyer 5M).

Cheers,
Greg S.

I've always found the clear BG patches are excellent - generally large on a;to/tenor and small on soprano and metal mouthpieces. Pack of 6 costs about £4.99 at sax.co.uk and Howarth, amongst other places.

I prefer the thicker rubber patches that I can make an indentation in with my top teeth. The thicker patch tends to open the mouth a bit more too. Cleaning the area where the patch is to be applied with denatured alcohol and the pressing the patch with a smooth hard object like a butter knife handle will help to adhere longer.

Is that the 0.4mm or 0.8mm/0.9mm thickness?

0.4mm clear BG patch size - very tough, very protective. I've never gone through one of these but used to regularly go through the 0.8mm black ones. The thinner black is also ok providing your teeth are not too jagged. Only use the 0.4mm now - found the 0.8mm too thick.

Thanks Tom. The Etude arrived today with a thinner patch than the Windcraft Student MP. They look like 0.4mm and 0.8mm respectively. The thin one is firmer than the squidgy thicker one. I'll try both later and see which I prefer.

I picked up the Grassi Tenor yesterday from the tech and it has a no-name ebonite MP (perhaps the original supplied with it), and also a Selmer Soloist "F" MP. Not sure if "F" is going to be a bit tricky for me to blow but I'll suck it and see.

Make your own. I do.

Buy a roll of Teflon tape (comes in different colours, width and thicknesses ) the adhesive is non toxic (tech sheet available).

At http://www.cshyde.com/

Cut in a trapezoid shape............a roll is going to last you forever.

I agree with Tom I much prefer the clear plastic over the black rubber, they last much longer, just bought some on eBay from china £4.99 for a pack of eight free postage first lot never arrived told vendor who apologised and said they must have got lost and sent another pack they just arrived the other day took a long time to get here, but at least there was no quibble, I once got some that had an additional film on them that after a while wore through it peeled off and was back to new again, I haven't managed to get those again and can't remember where I acquired them from.....John

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
