Recording Recording set-up

Although a relative beginner, I like listening to the various recordings posted by my more competent colleagues on this site. I am far from being able to emulate them, but would like to be able to hear myself play as others would hear me. What basic recording set up would you recommend - bearing in mind that I am a dyed in the wool Linux user?

Audacity is good open source editing software, there is a Linux version, I cannot advise you about regarding distributions.
There are tutorials here
I do not know enough about microphones to offer advise, I use a cheap Skype mic but there are better options such as the Zoom h1

I use a Zoom R8 for the basic recording and tinker with the results using Ardour or Audacity. All on Ubuntu Studio.

Thanks, I have Audacity, but wasn't aware that it could be used to add reverb. Must give it a go.

Re: Audacity, compression is also useful to remove the red marks where you did not get the recording level correct, you can also remove them by reducing the volume. I have not read the instructions, I just played with some of the things in the effects tab.

Just discovered why I couldn't get the effects tab to work in the past - I was opening, rather than importing my audio files. Now where is that microphone?

Couldn't find the mike, so bought a Zoom H2N - quite impressed with the technology - the playing needs a lot of improvement however!

I think most of us feel the same way about our efforts. But that's what the zoom is for!

Yes, it's good to get feedback this way - it showed me straightaway that I'm not holding some notes long enough. Just need to sort out a few backing tracks and I can really get to work on this aspect of my playing.
