If you have any suggestions about forum features you'd like to see (or not see) please let us know. We are always open to feedback - so please let us know of anything you'd like to see, also anything you think we might do better also. It's OK to criticise (but hopefully with some positive suggestions attached)

Hi Pete,
Good morning.
I use a set of world clocks off my phone. Being a global form it’s nice to know what time it is somewhere else in the world. A little after 10 AM here in Los Angeles. It’s after 6 PM in London. Is it possible to install some clocks?

That's a cool idea. Most of our interactions are asynchronous, so in a sense time is not relevant, but then at the same time :)confused:) today we're used to real time and that's quite seriously impacted when we're on different time zones.

NB: I wish my brother, who lives in LA, got that concept earlier. He used to wake us at any hour not realizing we were in a different time zone...

What I have in mind is not exactly a feature, but rather an idea that could lead to a feature...

Since there are many members spread around the world, organizing a physical meet is difficult and was actually impossible for a while due to the covid-19 situation. That had, in my opinion, at least one benefit for many of us. We are now capable of meeting remotely and most of us, I guess, experienced it one way or another in the last few months.

I have been away from my office for over a year now, but I'm still very much in contact with both my colleagues and our customers. Using various tools, like Teams, Meet, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Signal, etc.

At work, we have institutionalized a weekly meeting. Friday at 4pm. That's an opportunity for us to share concerns, ideas, experiences, almost anything that's in our mind.

How about a similar thing in the café? A regular meet that members (only) could attend to share ideas, experience, tips or simply to socialize...

This is not as simple as it may sound of course. Timing could be an issue. Here comes the time zone again... Language should not be an issue, as long as participants accept that not all members are native English speakers.

Then, the structure can prove to be a show stopper or a show goer.

Should there be a topic for the meet? A master of ceremony? A moderator is sort?

Should there be rules? Or course! But they need to be simple and self explanatory.

Oops! Hit the post reply button inadvertently...

Anyways, you get the idea and of course, one essential aspect is what collaboration platform should be used to allow as many as possible to participate?

Teams, Meet, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Signal, etc.

A survey is probably required to assist in deciding this...

But then what collaboration platform should we use for the survey? >:)
We need a survey platform survey.

Come on Nigel, we can do surveys here in the forum and you should know that, don't you?

On some forums there's a zoomable map of members' locations so you know who's nearby. The member can opt to add themselves to the map if they wish to be "found".
Now we're coming out of lockdown, or even if we weren't, such a feature may help locals get together to play, chat, socialise etc.

We used to have one but I think there were technical issues and it didn't get used after initial adding of a few members.

I did wonder if I'd seen a map here. That explains it.

Maybe it is there, and I haven't found it, but I would love a filter or subcategories in the yard sale, so that you only see (for instance) mouthpieces or accessories or saxophones.

It may be my lack of understanding, but the "prefix" feature seems a bit half baked sometimes, in some places.
There's, sometimes for example, "Beginner" but no "intermediate" or "advanced". So does "beginner" mean "leave your gun at the door"? And even then "Begginer" in what? music playing in general? sax playing? improve...
On the other hand, it seems to work better in accessories...
So, I'd suggest making it's purpose and value clearer.

Aside:
I could see a post tag system being useful if it was used consistently (and often they're not and become useless).

I recall suggesting this couple of years ago, because it's something I did weekly for 12 years. My suggestions regarding platforms:

If it's going to be video, use a platform that does not require registering. You post a URL (a web address) and anyone who clicks joins. There are many of these, but the one I known the longest is called Jitsi Meet. It can also record or even stream to youtube if that ever became desirable. In fact, if several people are set up for streaming, we could do a whole Café Saxophone Show on YouTube lIve.

I wonder if video is necessary? If not, there's always Clubhouse, audio-only but once created, a room can stay open over various time zones. Then there's Discord which has an audio feature, but does require registering an account. Otherwise, all video chats allow users to turn off the video.

I would want to do the same format as we did before, ie Skype. It's a format I think may people have become familar with. The one we did a while back showed it can work well for us (this was practice for a masterclass/clinic thing which sadly i am still unable to follow through with).

In fact.. it seems to me we could continue this actual discussion via Skype. I was about to amswer specific suggestions, but doing it virtually face to face could be very useful. We have a Cafe Skype pro account, so I'm very happy to schedule something.

That sounds good. Unfortunately, with a risk of looking like one who dropped a bomb and went running, I have limited availability over the next few days. Tomorrow is my kid's 17th birthday, then I'm off on a business trip for the whole week and it will be complicated...
