Sometimes I find the real benefit can simply be hearing someone else (better than you) interpreting something you've been playing their way and thinking (crikey - that's how it could sound!). The inspiration you take away from that can spur you on.

You are absolutely correct. It was also reassuring that he thought some of the problems I have in the low range are due to my instrument not my playing.
I realise that I am going to have to buy another Sax but if I can play as well as I can on what I have then it can only benefit me if I can ever afford a good Tenor in the long run surely?
