Playing like a bari on a tenor?

How do practise to play bari lines on a tenor? On my Martin saxes it's easier but on the other saxes I keep in good playing condition, it's harder. I'm right now trying to play/learn a version of "Mustang Sally" (not Pickett's) in concert A. So I have to play low Bb to B and so on. I don't want to bring to many saxes with me. I use to play a Yamaha 25 tenor when I play in hornsection. Blends better with the other hornplayers. A short sample so you now what I'm trying to explain: https://soundcloud.com/thomsax/msally

Some tenors sound quite "honky" down at the very bottom end. Particularly Selmer MkVI, in my view. I don't understand why this seems to be more true of the tenor than alto or baritone.

Or a minor leak can make those lowest notes hard to get reliably.

Tenors with a bigger bow tend to sound better at the bottom end, like Conn 10M, Keilwerth and maybe the Martin.

If you want to play nicely down at the bottom end, it is perfectly possible, but does take practice. And some high baffle mouthpieces would make it more difficult, although they might be what you want for a Rocking good sound.

I used to take alto, tenor and baritone along to gigs but got fed up with carrying all three. Now I just take alto and tenor and have transposed a few baritone lines onto tenor. That includes "Mustang Sally" and "I Just Wanna Make Love to You". I guess I could probably leave the alto behind too, but it does seem to suit some of the (cover) songs we play.

Well in that case I play the alto like a tenor, favouring the bottom end, & virtually never even go near the palm keys ! ..and as for altissimo ..noooo...🙂

The sax is sealing. So it's not the sax. I guess I must practise more. Perhaps it's in situations like this you realize that you are on a "student" sax and not a "pro" sax. I also have problem when I'm playing the tenor charts on "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (Stones version). I'm going from D3 to D1 with full force. IMO; the bell tones are better on Conn 10M, S20 and Keilwerth but the bell tones are easier to blow on my Martins.

You're right. Rocksax is more than just the high tones or altissimo. I just know a few altissimo tones.

@thomsax I'm particularly liking your ipgsolo and fluttertone solos

Andrew Clark is blowing the fluttertones and his own song "Junior". Andrew was doing a Masreclass for advandced students. Pickett is blowing the solo. Both Pickett and Clark have very good altissimo and fluttertone. And they are also from time to time playing in the "classical arena". To be classical taught helps to be a good rocker? Andrew Clark spend some years with eight hours daily practising. Like an ordiairy work. Giging during weekends
