Gigs & releases Pink Floyd Tribute Band looking for saxophone player

Hello everyone!

I have a Pink Floyd tribute band in Tampa/FL and we’re looking for a sax player that also can play acoustic guitar. Backing vocals and some percussion abilities would be wonderful.

The player would be a permanent member of the band!

For more information, search for The Heart of the Sun Band on the web!

Or text me on 1-970-825-9359

Thanks a lot!
Marco

Unfortunately, I'm in the Netherlands, but if I lived in the Tampa/FL area I'd certainly consider it! You sound great and I hope you manage to recruit someone who fits the description!

I remember somebody on SOTW with a Springsteen tribute band looking for a replacement for their Clarence Clemmons. I think they came up short. Shame really as these look like good gigs. Sadly, Florida Is too far for me. I don’t like Pink Floyd either, I didn’t think they used much sax but I wouldn’t really know.

The problem Floyd tributes have is that there aren't many songs with sax in, and only 3 really well known songs, so there's a very good chance that the sax player's going to get to play for 10 minutes at most during a 2 hour (or more) performance. And that gets boring really quickly, so the band needs to find other things for the sax player to do - life's a lot easier if the sax player is a multi-instrumentalist.

Hmmm, yes, but IHMO not the best way to teach sax players how to play anything. And leaving out a lot of useful information.

To every tune (and sax part/solo), there's an underlying chord - and rhythm - structure. Dick Parry obviously knew both and improvised on these on 'Us and Them'. I've only flicked through the video but as far as I can tell, the video doesn't cover either the chord or rhythm structure. It just explains which 'notes' to play to replicate Dick Parry's sax contributions. Without placing these 'notes' in any kind of chord or rhythm context, any student only learns 'what notes to play' asnd not 'why'.

I've not 'analysed' the whole tune but (using virtual piano), I can tell that the basic chord is some form of concert D, transitioning to concert B en then to Em. There are various places on the internet where you can look up the chord structure to various songs. Just one example: ultimate guitar tab (which also includes piano).

So I suspect that there are better video's out there that explain the Dick Parry parts in the context of the chord and rhythm structures. His choices of solos and fills then make a lot more sense. You could dig deeper into why he might have chosen 'these notes/intervals' with these chords in this song. But from just repeating notes out of context, you IMHO don't learn much.

I would definitely have checked this out.
I'm a professional saxophonist, and love Pink Floyd.
Only draw back is I live in NY.
Good luck with finding the right fit guys....:stoat:

Hence the acoustic guitar, vocals and percussion. I expect percussion will the most called for. Then you find your reeds dried out when your moment comes.
Done quite few gigs with Floyd tribute bands over years, yes, usually the 3 suspects - Money, Shine On, Us & Them. Worse still the really serious ones want you to play both baritone & tenor in Shine On to be authentic... I always did it on tenor, not lugging a baritone around for a few bars in a 2 hour show.

There few others you need to know, Dogs Of War and Gunners Dream, but yes it a lot of sitting around for a few parts in 3 songs. Most usually double on percussion to cope with the boredom of 10 minute guitar solos....😆

Re the dry reed thing, go synthetic 👌😁

I cycle or walk most places - so 😛

Otherwise 🙁
I don't want to hijack this thread but I am probably the sold mountain biker amongst the roadies and I am still in the top 200 statewide. Skinny legs or not 😎

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
