Born in Alabama, Tharpe was quite at home, playing the Jocopa Club, Phenix City, Alabama, late seventies. It was a whirlwind month, with Jerry Lee Lewis's band setting in with us, as well as Johnny Rodriguez aka "The Goat-Napper." One Saturday night Julian Tharpe sat in, setting his steel on stage and playing to an astonished crowd. Mastering a double 14-string twin-necked instrument with 13 foot pedals and four knee levers. it was the jaw-dropping technique coupled to jazz riffs that stunned the room. As far as is known, his virtuosity in jazz was never recorded.
