Trying to recall where I'd seen this engraving before (it's quite common) I was thinking maybe an Italian maker, but then...

Anyone have any ideas if it IS French, perhaps pre-dating the well known Buffet Crampon models, or who made it?

:confused2:

That's an Evette, student line of Evette Schaeffer Buffet, typically made by one of the Italian makers, like Santoni. I'd guess 1960s from the general condition.

Back in the day, here in the US, in the 60s and 70s, what we had for student horns were old Conn Pan Americans, Bundys, Clevelands, Indianas, and a few Europeans of which the most common were the "Evette" - same horn you see here. I've seen a lot of these through the years.

Kind of a cool little bell brace with the fleur-de-lis (it's half cut off from view in the photo).

It's a piece of sheet metal. If Buffet wanted Santoni (or whoever made this thing) to make a special bell brace, the maker charged Buffet maybe $500 for the wee stamping die to make the piece of sheet metal, and all the Evettes in that batch had the fleur-de-lis bell brace. Easy peasy.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
