...for my next trick
...a modern ballad for your delectation.

I am delighted to have been invited to host again so this months ballad is a tune the older members may well recall from their youth. Indeed it is possible they may have a wax cylinder roll or '78' in their collections.

'Just like a butterfly (that's caught in the rain)' written by Mort Dixon and Harry M Woods in 1927.

I have to give some credit (not a lot) to Sharkfin who mentioned it as a possible BOTM in a reply to the May 'Cry me a river' thread. Having heard Diana Krall performing it on her Glad Rag Doll album I agree with him that it is an interesting proposition and I hope you all enjoy giving it a go.

I have so far been unable to find any recordings of it performed on saxophone but I am sure they are out there somewhere. If not then now is your chance to make history. Meanwhile a few examples to whet your appetites.

and an early version by Annette Hanshaw
Many thanks to Chris who has as usual provided the essential backing track and pdf files which hopefully are available for download here:

Can't get my head round this one. Too many other tunes referenced. I was interested to note while looking up the composer, Harry Woods, that he had a hand in "Try a little tenderness" in the 1930's. Who'd'a thought Ottis was referencing Bing.
