BOTM Oct 2016 Satin Doll

I am absolutely happy with my 2 Selmers (Mark VI and SBA), but there are times, when I prefer my Yamaha 875, especially if it's about response in the low register.
So I am "testing" right now, which one of my 2 MPCs (Ted Klum Florida and Philtone Sapphire) and which neck (M came with the 875, I bought the unlaquered G later) sounds better (or how they sound different).
So here are two videos with Satin Doll using the same settings and the G and M neck.
I must say that there are times where I am tempted to sell the Yamaha to somebody who can make better use of the ultrasmooth sound this horn has 🙂

I preferred the G neck too - seemed a little more direct.
But there was very little in it - they both sound great to me.

You had a comparison earlier between the two Selmers, the Yamaha and another sax (a Viking, I think), and personally I slightly preferred the sound of the Yamaha to both of the Selmers. But of it's your preference that matters, not mine.

Hi @Guenne Nice playing! I've listened on a very expensive pair of Bose headphones and my not so expensive sound systen each time with no EQ dialled in. I'm going to disagree with other responders but then it's what floats my boat not theirs and everyone is entitled to preferences. I preferred the sound of the M neck, overall it seemed to give a slightly fuller, richer more sonorous tone while the G neck seemed to be slightly more focussed. In the end the choice is yours, I've always liked large chambered MPs and their depth of tone, bright screamers don't do it for me, I don't think there is that much to choose between these two necks though. I just prefer coffee and cream to black expresso. Regards Al

I prefer 'Ballad of a Sad Young Bengal Cat' but that's hardly surprising it's got a far better picture.
I didn't manage to listen to that one. I'll have to now, since you recommend it 🙂
I had a listen to "When Sunny gets Blue" because I've been trying to
Play that one all the way through for a year now.

Yay, I'm back from the sunny warm Maldives to the cold grey North. Still probably slightly deaf from diving and with a brilliant gash on my leg from a Moray eel bite 🙂

Had a quick go at this, just getting back into it, so not yet even back at pre holiday levels but getting there. This is a tricky one...at least for me...I find it difficult to understand. Starts off with C# and B...then goes to C and Bb, then C and B? I'm sure there's a reason for it, but doesn't make much sense to my uncultured brain 🙂

Oh yeah, forgot to say, only 2 choruses, no soloing...excuses: well, it's end of the month neway, but also the above how the notes/anti-notes keep changing...🙂

The reason is that it's a Duke Ellington composition. Compositions by accomplished pianists tend to have a certain something to my ear. Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Thelonius Monk, Scott Joplin, Count Basie are but a few of the late greats that have an interesting back catalogue.

Im not sure I understand your confusion.

You seem to be playing the correct notes in the first 4 bars.

ie B and A in the first 2 bars. C sharp and B in the next two bars. (tenor pitch )

what is it that is confusing you?

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
