Ok, I've offered to host this month, following the suggestion I made, and a few people agreeing I've let Colin know that I'll do it. It's early in the morning so I'm taking a bit of a jump and setting this thread up...if something else has already been agreed, then the mods will just have to delete this one :)

Summertime, I think it's in 'first 5 tunes' list for every beginner? But also some slightly more advanced people have played it. Charlie Parker did it for the Alto people.

Can we please agree that nobody post the version of Coltrane murdering it on Soprano :) or at least please give ample warning :)

Chris will I hope provide the usual later, but this is easy to find on the net, so no need to wait for that really.

Finally, something slightly different. Here's a link of a friend (and my teacher), playing it on my gear. It's not really an example of his 'best' work, he was really just playing around with my setup (Sax and mouthpiece). Quite funny in some ways as he's a Link player, and doesn't really like my Berg. It's a vid showing why I wasn't here last month as I was in the Maldives :) You need to fast forward to 5:40 for Summertime. It's my first ever video also, so don't expect BBC quality...I only posted it for the Summertime track.

On of my favourite youtube players is Mark Maxwell/Dr Saxlove. He does a great version of 'Ain't no sunshine', plus an interesting smooth jazz version of Game of Thrones theme. As a 'smooth jazz' player, he's probably very much a 'Marmite' player, but I love his tone.

His version of Summertime, I'm still debating, it's quite (very) different from most other versions I've heard.

You said nothing about Coltrane on tenor - so here he is:
The imposition of Coltrane on the world, I take as proof that Miles Davis had a sense of humour :)

Actually, I might have been confused coz the album cover for this track on YouTube is Coltrane with a soprano, I dislike his sound on Sop so much that I always avoided the track. Seems he was playing his 'slightly less offensive' Tenor.

A Ballad a Month

Thanks for posting this number Tiberius . Just in case anybody is unaware. The ballad thread is now officially 5 years old . and hopefully good for another while .thanks mainly to the star that is Chris Knowles, who more or less gives us all the resources to do our stuff. In addition I,d just like to take this personal chance to thank everybody that contributes to this resource. "It,s almost a ready made set list for a few of us and contributes to our repeatiours ( spelling checker in espaniol non functional.)" .

I did some recordings of this tune in December 2013 for SOTW. I used it to compare two of my mouthpieces with two different reeds. Here are the takes:

The reeds used are a La Voz medium (cane) and a Rico Plasticover 2. The mouthpieces are a 1980's Ponzol Super 120 (right channel) and a 1950's Otto Link Florida no USA 9 (left channel). The Ponzol starts the solo sequence in both takes (kind of Summertime Texas Tenor battle!).

1 - 'Summertime' (Ponzol 120 - Florida no USA 9 - La Voz medium):

2 - 'Summertime' (Ponzol 120 - Florida no USA 9 - Rico Plasticover 2):

The differences while playing feel much bigger then what you can hear in the (compressed) mp3 recordings. The Link sounds a bit darker, but not much. The Ponzol plays easier and a bit louder (not much). The cane reed sounds a bit darker then the Plasticover. I prefer the La Voz sound on the Link.

I hope to do a new take later this month.

Some great version of this in here.
It's a great choice Tiberius and something I have never though of playing before.

...as an aside, what are the other 4?
