Beginner Nilo Hovey: Practical Studies for Saxophone

Andante cantabile

The other day I picked up Nilo Hovey’s First Book of Practical Studies for Saxophone to see whether I had made any progress. I hadn’t looked at this book for eighteen months, and two things struck me. The first was how little of it I remembered even though I thought I had learnt all of it. The other thing that struck me was how attractive most of the little pieces are, and how they lend themselves to good phrasing and fluent playing.

Book 1 contains 46 pieces in keys up to three flats and three sharps. I have no trouble reading music, but I could imagine others would find these arrangements helpful in extending their knowledge.

As for the result of this little experiment: I am sure my playing is better, and it reminded me how beneficial it can be to go over old material.
