Might be a silly question.. but how do I record the backing track and my playing into one item?

  • I have a laptop
  • I have a Zoom digital recorder
  • I have a big hi-fi system
  • I have a DAC, if needed...
  • I have Wavelab...

I use audacity :)

Start here

It is free to download, you then import the backing track and play using the zoom as both headphones and microphone. There are a few threads about it if you do a search. :)

Good luck and come back with any questions

Audacity works on one level like a cassette recorder. It's quite intuitive if you're a certain age. And free is nice:)

I think you might need one other vital piece of equipment not on your list.

If you want really simple, one option is to stand near you loud hi fi, play the backing track through the hi if loud enough so it matches with the volume of your saxophone, play along with the backing track, and record the whole lot with the Zoom a little distance away.
It's basic, but that all I usually do, and it seems to work ok.

OK Thanks guys and thanks for the PMs from people too.

Audacity works well. Lots of good videos on YouTube. I didn't find it very intuitive, but it's not difficult to learn.
