Music from Grandma's youth!

Hi all,

I am thinking of putting together a repertoire of pieces from "Grandma's Youth" (or "Grandpa's Youth") with a view to playing in local care homes, especially those who specialize in dementia care.
I know my husband's late mother could sing along with songs from her earlier life, even though she could not tell us what she'd had for breakfast, or indeed sometimes recognize who we were. So the pleasure gained by people with dementia through singing was quite apparent.

So, I'd like some suggestions of pieces that I could play, and that hopefully I can find some music for. I guess we're probably looking at hits from 1930s to 1960s.

thanks

My whole repertoire. lol

Sentimental Journey always goes down well. Original Les Brown. Doris Days first hit.
Polkadots and Moonbeams. Sinatra's Debut. Most of Fats Waller. Ain't misbehavin and I'm gunna sit right down and write myself a letter. See my cloud for some others.

You'll probably find that from the 1930s people will remember many of the songs by Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and George Gershwin. A nice song that my sax group did an easy version of a couple of years ago is I'll String Along With You, by Harry Warren. It featured in the 1934 film 20 Million Sweethearts with Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers. Al Bowlly recorded it too.
