Mouthpieces Mouthpiece patches on metal mouthpieces

I use two 0.8mm patches stacked on all my horns.
0.01" seems very thin.
Why would what the mouthpiece is made of have any bearing on the use of patches?

I have used black rubber patches on my metal, ebonite, and plastic pieces for more than 20 years. Soprano through to bass saxophone. Clarinet & bass clarinet as well.

I am not fussy about what brand of patch I use, and some of the patches that I have had on my most-used mouthpieces have been on them since I got them (20+ years).
