A flat surface and feeler gauges works for me

I use taper gaughes and glass gaughes for measuring tip (below). To measure the lay; glass gaughes and feeler gaughe.

In "Band Instrument Repairing Manual" by Eric Brand there is a good description about measuring mpcs.

I bouhgt my equipment at BW&WW in South Bend, USA for 15 years ago.

if you get realllly stuck, you can use sheets of paper, if the weight/thickness is known...
