Being a former trumpet blower I find left hand fingering more difficult has anyone ideas for brushing up left hand finger speed. chromatic runs or ?

Go back to the basics. Practice your scales. Start slowly then speed them up. You can also play etudes, or make your own etude that just focuses on left had fingerings.

Your Idea of doing chromatic runs is fine too.

Do a Clark Terry, he used to play trumpet and flügel at the same time.

Yes, it's like Frank Trumbauer said "Practice. You don't get this good overnight!".
I played trumpet many years ago but on taking up reed instruments needing fingers of both hands, I just thought of it as something completely different.
