[ADMIN EDIT: these posts have been moved from Choosing a beginner saxophone thread],

Sorry to hijack this topic. I am offered a Keilwerth SX90R for the same price as the Bauhaus I was ordering and am tempted to get it instead of the Bauhas. But being a clueless person who only has 1 trial saxophone lesson...I face the same dilemma as Matabayahsi which caused him to not invest in a 2nd hand. But I am so tempted as one of the saxophone teacher I spoke to said it is a Pro model...I am still contemplating. Help!

The SX90R is a top professional sax. What's going to determine if it'll work for you is condition - cost of any repairs needed. You either need a technician or an experienced sax player to check the instrument for you. If it doesn't need too much work, it's a bargain. Pro saxes are good to play, not to be avoided because you're starting, unlike some pro mouthpieces.

I have attached the pictures of its condition. I have not asked the person how long he has owned it but he said this and the Mark VI are his main horns. Do know that all of your advices and opinions are very much appreciated because I truly value them!

Please advice! I couldn't get any pictures of the pads, instead he suggested for him to show me the saxophone in person so I can look at the pads. Seeing as I have no idea about the saxophone, I am just going to try my luck and hope for the best. I'm meeting him next Saturday to check through the saxophone.

For more pictures (as I am only allowed to attach 2 pictures):

The price he is selling me at is USD1,200. He said it was serviced recently.

He bought it from someone else and owned it for about 6 months. The serial number dates to an early year 2000 production.

What should I do...?

Value is difficult to set. You're trying to guess local value against the cost of bringing one in, which is also likely to be a gamble.

Cosmetically it doesn't matter, it's whether you want something shines or not. However people are often prepared to pay more for a new looking instrument as they expect less wear. But it's only an indicator. You may find the feel of something like this puts you off.

What really matters are the pads, corks, springs, regulation and wear in the mechanism. If you can get a good trust worthy technician to check it for you, and it doesn't need much work, it's a good price by German standards. In your position, I wouldn't buy it without this check.

What did you mean by "it's a good price by German standards"?

He offered to let me get his tech to check and pay for any work required on the saxophone. I am really tempted.

Initially it was the Bauhaus but there were some delay and I figured I could ask him if he could recommend me something else instead of a Bauhaus for the money I am paying. He said he has for sale an SX90R. So after asking y'all and my future teacher who said this is a professional horn I should consider provided the tech worked it through, I decided to give 2nd hand instruments a try.

Cosmetic...I guess I can buy a new horn if I wanted something pretty but if the offer for this is good then why not, right?

My SX90R is 15 years old or so (probably a bit more now). It hasn't had anywhere near the life that that one has but is still brilliant. If I had to replace I'd be looking at another Keilwerth right off. Can you ask your teacher to have a look/play?

I think 1,200 is a fair price. Especially with the amount of questions and stuff I put him through and asked. And the fact that he said he will pay for any additional tech services if required.

Yes! I can't wait for next Saturday!

That's the main thing and also he was kind enough to get the techie to look at it before delivery. Good deal all round I believe. Well done again. Now off to get a Yamaha 5c mouthpiece and Rovner ligature, a couple of number 2 reeds or 1.5 and a saxophone stand!

Oh yes! A sling, how could I have forgotten!? Stupid me! I need a sling, thanks for rhe reminder. The stand, I am contemplating as...my missus or future missus does not know my sax cravings. (Could not resist the pun!)

So I intend to hide my saxual needs from her. I intend to learn the saxophone for my own enjoyment and perhaps to perform on our wedding...if there is one...years down the road. So it would be a surprise for her.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
