Joshua Redman

I went to see Joshua Redman last night at the Barbican Centre.

He was excellent. He was playing the Still Dreaming album / band, which is admittedly not my favourite album of his but their musicianship was undeniable. I took my son along, and whilst he is not a jazz fan he seemed to have a good time. He liked Brian Blade the drummer.

However the coolest thing was a few days before! I was visiting Santa Cruz, CA for work and was flying home on Sunday from SFO. I was hanging around in the airport listening to Joshua Redman on my iPhone. I just grabbed a coffee, sat down and was watching folk in the queue and there was this guy who looked just like Joshua Redman in the queue with a sax case.

Later he was sitting in the gate lounge for my flight, so I went up to him and asked. Sure enough it was him, I happen to have Larry Teal’s Art of the saxophone in my bag so I got him to sign it. He was really nice!

What a great story, thanks for sharing :)

Re-upping this thread, I was lucky enough to have caught Joshua Redman at the Barbican last week, joined by singer Gabrielle Cavassa.

I hadn't spent anytime listening to the latest album at that point aside from a quick spin on the way. I really enjoyed the performance some really beautiful moments. The sound was excellent and meant there was real clarity in hearing some of the very subtle, intricate, quiet sax lines that were often happening as a bed underneath the vocals.

One of the songs really stayed with me after the show and I had to give repeated listens over the past few days, here's a version I found from YouTube:

Thanks for posting this. Knew the name well, but not his playing. Another bloody good player. Will give more time to his output. Like it.
