John Surman is one of the key figures in a generation of European musicians who have crucially expanded the international horizons of jazz during the past thirty years or so. Long acknowledged as an improviser of world class, Surman has also composed a body of work which extends far beyond the normal range of the jazz repertoire.

You don't see much reference to him these days.

I've been listening to JS off and on over the years. A very unique voice. Mostly his ECM stuff, either solo or with other artists (I especially like his work on John Abercrombie's November CD).

If you get a chance, check out his comments in his ECM "Rarum:" collection. They're hilarious.

He did a "talking heads"/performance lecture at the South Bank Centre on Saturday morning. A very interesting character and you should hear his altissimo on the Bari !!

What a talent! I have a CD of his I bough back in the late 80's called the road to St Ives. Incredible musician. He's one of those living legends that rarely seems to break into the lime light.

One of my favourite albums is Extrapolation, John Mclaughlin with John Surman on sop and bari. If you haven't heard it get on Spotify. Fantastic.
