Hey gang it's been a while. I was listening to blue train on this album and it sounds like he changes key from the melody to his solo. What do you guys think? Is he just playing out of the scale?

I am just listening to the youtube clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHKSvKFlfak
he actually starts with the same notes of his solo on the Blue Train album.
It sounds to me he stays on Eb7 (concert) blues for a while. But I don't understand McCoy Tyner's chords. It sounds like he is thinking C minor, but I am just on my laptop.

Dolphy, on the other hand, is playing in his own personal tonal system 🙂

Thanks for pointing it to me.

"I'm playing the right notes. But not necessarily in the right order."

did some googling, not much to be found about the live version, but I found a clip of someone playing the original album version on the cello - http://www.sokillingman.com/transcriptions/guest-post-by-adam-spiers-john-coltrane-blue-train/

and a whole load of academic dissertations on Coltrane's music - eg
http://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4348/m2/1/high_res/dissertation.pdf

typing 'John Coltrane solo analysis' into google will provide plenty of light reading to keep you happy, now the nights are drawing in...
