I would love to go away for the weekend or even a week of doing nothing but eating, drinking and listening to great jazz but what is the best festival to go to.

We have the Bude festival down here but it is all trad jazz I fear

I'm looking for something a little more modern

Any ideas?

The Jazz festival in Marciac, a small bastide village in SW France, is a fantastic trip. The Marsalis family are there at least every other year, and many big names every year. I don't think the programme is released until April this year. The festival is in the first 2 weeks of August.

It is place where we have holidayed almost every year for the last 12 years, mainly for the area - the jazz is an added bonus!

Bude's too big for relaxing as you've said, my opinion. I like smaller less commercial festivals and compromise on the music ... I'm still waiting for this year's Festival Eye which covers all festivals confirmed to date (alternative to Glastonbury/V/Womad).

How modern do you want? Not a lot of sax playing as it's mostly guitars, but Dursley Gypsy Guitar Festival I'd recommend ... checkout http://www.smoothjazz.com/lifestyle/festivals/index.php?month=&next=150

Incidentally, if any of you ever get to any Blues festivals, drop me a PM and let me know which ones, I might be there covering the photography for a magazine or two, it'd be great to meet a few of you!!

Sadly I don't cover any of the Jazz Fests, not been able to convince any of Simon's friends at Jazzwise to use me yet :)

Cheers

Hey Mamos,

I was lucky enough to play at a few jazz festivals last year. My fav was Montreux, big crowds and a stunning venue at the bottom of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

At least two thirds of the festival was free too and featured some cracking artists, check it out at http://www.montreuxjazz.com/

I wonder how the economic situation is affecting jazz festivals. Here in Lancaster we have just heard that the city council has axed our festival. It had been running for several years but had never reached great heights in general, although we did have Courtney Pine last year. I feel it had always suffered from a lack of publicity but could have been good. There is a lot of support for good music of any kind in this area.
