IOTM January 2014: Moonlight after the storm

Impro of the month
DeadAudiolink Removed

Trying for a bit of a funky feel with some licks nicked from Maceo Parker (well as close as I'll ever get anyway). Loved this BT Aldevis, thank you and feel like I have only just started with it. Not sure about the recording - is it too much reverb?

Sue: some nice ideas there, I thought, and i really like the alto sound. If I was to suggest any improvement, it would be to try and make the rhythms crisper, and tighter with the backing track (something I've been struggling with myself).

Lovely elegant sound. nobody will ever be sure about a recording.... Maybe you may try putting the same reverb on both sax and BT.
Funny, i don't really hear the major 6th on a minor chord that way, On a major chord it has a warm feeling but on a minor it seems more tense or questioning, if that makes any sense.
It does. Maybe my concept of "hope" is not far from "questioning"...

Very Nice Alto sound. and the rev for me added to the mood. Because you have this sound, why not use it more to your advantage with some long tones in the impro, possibly at the start. tell a story. Not being a improviser myself, these are the things i like to work on. I also find turning up the bass or even letting the BT drown me out when recording { and balance for the final mix} helps me connect with the BT more, and as has been said great BT. Anyway nice rendition. I think when a player has a good sound, its easy to like. Even if you just let the music wash over you.I wish you would post more often.

Here's a first shot at this one.
I'm not sure how well my improv efforts suit the tune, backing was a little more modern than I'm used to.
But it was fun to try something different.

Gutsy rendition. I would have more of the BT. in the mix tho.

Thanks Martin, I struggle so much with rhythms and think I spend so long trying to figure out what's going to be interesting for the listener that I lose momentum and end up just noodling aimlessly. I'm not a natural improvisor I'm afraid but will keep working on it as it's something I'd like to do more often. These threads help a lot though and I love to listen to all the other players on here and try to learn from different interpretations.

Thanks Jim for your lovely comments and the suggestion regarding building a story. Like I said before it's something I want to work and as this BT is so good I will use it again and again. 🙂

Finally got round to this. My first post in this forum. Also my first recording with my new (Hanson) tenor.

That sounds great Martin, what a cool first post. I agree that the timing's a bit forward in places, but it doesn't detract from the playing. Keep posting them up, bluesman 😎

Nice one Sue, I might try and nick some of the licks off you 🙂

This is food for thought
I tend to find my fingers get the wanders, so what comes out is a bit incoherent. What I have started doing is playing the the sustained chord with the left hand on the keyboard, and play around with some notes on the right. I did this with the impro in Antonios Song, and was pleasantly surprised how having a framework of sketches gave me more freedom and a better more of what I want to say.
I don’t know why I have persevered with just trying to make it happen { possibly thinking because i can play lots of notes LOL} with just hearing and playing along with a BT. I have seen the best Sax/Trpt players do this in the past.

My democratic nature requires me to have this approved by the potential improvisers.
Since I am usually unhappy with the pan-modal approach, I wrote something dorian.
It is not all doom and gloom; a major 6th gives some hope.

8 bars of concert Gminor (dorian), 4 of Fminor (dorian), 4 of Gminor (dorian)

Further details on request.

Downloading to mp3?
I loved this, thank you.
Is there any way I can download / convert this to an mp3 file, please?
I keep playalongs like this in an iTunes file on my Mac.

My message seems to have got lost. Here it is: (Edited by Jeanette posts merged)

Thanks Jim.
I always tend to put too much of the horn in the mix when mixing through the headphones, but without them I tend to do the opposite.
I find it hard to get a good balance.
Sue: liked that one and thought your tone was a standout.
Would also agree about holding onto some of those notes a little longer.
But enjoyed it all the same.s
