Flutes etc. Is there a reason why I shouldn't play sax and flute? If not, which to choose as a beginner?

I have a second cousin, Charlie Boyle, who owns the ironmongers shop in Castlemaine and plays guitar in a traditional band. His wife was a Sulllivan - there tends to be a wedding between the two families every generation or so. Boyles were millers and Sullivans were millwrights.
