I have in my possession a really nice zephyr alto that I was trying out to see what It's got before deciding if would buy it . I did all the research on the net and also called a few experts on vintage saxophones and got my friend tony p to have a go . I have decided to buy the horn as I love lots of things about it very light action better placement of keys to my king stencil and a fatter more jazz sound and all this said it needs an overhaul so can only get better .

We'll done!

Try and find one of the Brillhart personalines to go with it. Really sweet!

Cheers kev I have my Meyer on it at the moment but will have a look for a brillhart in the future just need to be careful to not overspend . It's one of the first zephyrs sometimes considered the series 1 do you own a later zephyr or a special :)

My first sax teacher has one. He has a few altos, Mk VI, Yani, early Selmer A Sax, Beuscher as well as the Zephyr. This was by far the nicest sounding - to my ear. But it wouldn't suit funk or a lot of other modern stuff.

My zephyr is in for its overhaul it's going to be out of action for a month or maybe longer but I know it will be worth it .This is how it looks at the moment :)

I would love to try one if anyone has one who is near essex I found they pop up on saxquest sometimes . I do love my Meyer so I hope that works on my zephyr I also have a berg that came with it so need to sell that to get some money :)

I might pop it on the yard sale and my king Cleveland help pay for all this :)

If you like your Meyer, you should check out Ed Pillinger. NYA. I have a one in Bronzite
Fantastic Mouthpiece.

PS. I spent 6 months buying and selling MPs on EBay, then I tried some of Ed Pillingers, the only one that came close to eds was a JJ.HR. If i compared the MPs with actors, the JJ sounded like an actor off eastenders, compared with Eds, sounding more like a Richard Burton,

Since you are located in the U.K., keep an eye out for a vintage mouthpiece known as the KELL MAXITONE. This was an Arnold Brilhart designed mouthpiece model that was offered exclusively in Britain, and was/is a great piece along the same lines as the Personaline interior dimensions etc.

I have two of these for alto, and they are remarkable.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to let him reface etc my Meyer if needed ? The mouthpieces do look very good quality and I have heard a lot of good things about Ed pillinger might have to be a road trip :)

Yes that's another option, but I thought that you were very happy with your Meyer, so I was thinking Ed as an alternate type of Meyer MP. Could be worth a visit in the future. Also he is in North London. Not a million miles from you.:)

I think I will go over and have a chat with him see what's the best option :)

If I have a Meyer 8 do you know what number would match on a brillhart :)

looks like a Meyer 8 alto is about the same as a Brilhart 8 ~ 0.85" - 0.86" although there's likely to be a bit of variation

My zephyr is back from its overhaul and I have played on it 3 times the first go was the trial run getting used to the new layout of the keys . Then I let tony p have a go and he made it sound great I had a go after he finished and I could see how I was getting around the instrument much Quicker and everything was just in the right place were as the Cleveland was a bit of a stretch on some keys . I then played it in my lesson and also my sax teacher played it who liked it he made it sound fantastic which inspired me which was great . So basically very very happy I know as I play it it can only get better seems to be a horn that can do most types of music plays soft then blasts when you need it I have found my horn but the mouthpiece saga may continue ;) lol

Great to hear! I'll be interested to hear what mouthpiece you settle on.
