Saxophones Heads-up VERY Cheap Tenor @ CG

I`d have had the Alto if I`d not snagged a ratty but 100% playable (and far superior) Jupiter 767 a few weeks ago

Really glad the thread benefitted someone from the café 😀

Jon - I`d suggest Ringing them and suggesting to them how to pack a sax, left to their own devices, they may just put black film around the case and slap a label on it .. an alto will probably survive but not a Tenor in one of those awful generic Chinese cases ......... make sure they put wrap inside the case to stop the horn moving and use plenty at the ends of the case for when UKMail throw the thing around ..

Absolutely crocked. Will be on its way back, have written to them explaining. If they don't agree to refund in full with my return postage costs, I'll open a case with PayPal.

They'll usually arrange to collect and refund, no problem. I had the same experience in 2013 with a tenor. Just a bin liner around the ABS case, as Ads says.

I`ve had a couple of good'uns but I drill them about Packing ...... I`m sure Jon knows the score, he`s had a few from there too .

It was actually extremely well packed, loads of jumbo bubble. Most of the sax was in very good nick, but the left pinky cluster had taken an almighty whack, so it was bent up, leaving a good 4mm of play in all the pinky rods. So, no working G#, with consequent leaks down the rest of the range, and no notes below C#. The case, a flimsy ABS cheapo had no damage whatsoever, so I think it was damaged before despatch rather than in transit.

I'm sure I'll get a refund.

The damage was probably the reason why the owner sold it to CG.
Not worth the cost of repair and he couldn't sell it direct to a player.

I bought a Jupiter tenor like that from a local branch last year, it wasn`t that bad, it had a few rod mount pillars pushed in making it unplayable - the branch didn`t know there was anything worng with it until I pointed it out and showed them why it wouldn`t play so was able to secure a very good price on the spot getting a quote from.Conollys whilst in the shop - I bought it and they it out beautifully, of course it turned out better than if it been OK on the shelf because it had been through Charlie's workshop but being a Jupiter 7 series, it was worth it, a Chinese no-namer has to play on delivery to be worth anything at all unless wanted for a project .

Sounds like a tumble from a stand.

My Weltklang Baritone got knocked off the stand at a gig and took the fall on the LH pinky table. It was a right mess. It took me ages to get it back in shape. A right royal faff. There's a lot of regulation in that area. Luckily no pillars were pushed in and only few more dinks and donks.

The good news with bent keys is, that they bend. What bends will bend back if you're gentle. Price should reflect damage. £100 is too much for a bent Chinese tenor. Looking at the pics there's no clear shot of the pinky table. This may be by coincidence but maybe not. They seem to know the going rate at CG and rarely let a gem slip past in my experience.

I'd tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. They're not the brightest of people.

I agree with all that, Colin.

In fairness to CG, they have sent two extremely apologetic emails (one from customer service, one from the branch). They're going to collect it, as David suggested they would, which saves me the hassle of sorting it out, and provide a refund.

Pawn that cares!

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
