It's a New Year so what are our predictions for GAS in 2013?

You know you want the next upgrade in sax technology... Heh Heh Heh:

  • A new B&W range of celebrity sax player endorsed saxophones?
  • A 3D-printed mouthpiece fashioned in dried larks spittle and abraded with a sheet of dung beetle carapace??
  • An intermediate size of sax between baritone and tenor called the "Melody Eff"?

My prediction, though it might take a while, is a new choice of metal body... we have brass and bronze but how about titanium? Could that be the future?

How do you think the HORN will progress???

Happy Hogmanay to one and all

I have high hopes of being very good this new year.Another baritone and thats it ,i'm hoping.

Titanium saxes could be very blingy. My colleague makes some amazing jewellery out of the stuff. It reacts amazingly to heat treatment. It is very a very hard material though so Debbie's partner will have to get some muscles.

I can just imagine it - titanium saxes with titanium earrings and other dangly bits as sound enhancers... No need for Canonball stones or neck enhancer weights... Good to use as a self defence club in hard/rough venues as well. Wonder what the metal will do to the sound? >:)

Dunno but it would be as light as a feather.
Won't be able to sleep tonight, Kev in titanium earrings.

As for Gas 2013, after reading and listening to Taiwanese Alto Shootout, I think an alto may be sought.
We'll see....

There used to be a guy round here that made titanium jewellery. He had an acid bath and an old model train transformer to dip the finished parts in. The current produced the rainbow effect of the tempering colours. I could handle a straight rainbow sop. Mmmm

Why has nobody ever had a go with stainless steel?you would think if you can stamp a sink out of the stuff a sax shouldn't be too much trouble Maybe it's the fingerprint thing.....John

Ps As far as GAS goes I'm already all GAS'd out for 2013 and thinking of cutting up the credit cards :(

It'd be a hassle, and there's not enough benefit to justify it. Stainless steel is good for things that, well, need to be stainless, and it's worth the effort of working with such a hard material where its properties are required. A sax tube is very complex (and you wouldn't be able to draw the toneholes, as SS isn't ductile enough), you'd have to weld the posts on and there'd be very few benefits over brass to make it worth the effort.

No SS sax's please. It just means even more never ending threads about how the steel effecects the sound, better or worse

If my kitchen drawer's anything to go by, a stainless steel sax would tend to play sharp.

I sincerely love this forum.
