I went and see Gary Smulyan's masterclass in Crowborough, tonight.
I sincerely would like to thank:
- Mr. Smulyan, for his beautiful way of living music
- Sax.co.uk for hosting the free event
- Vandoren, for sponsoring the event

Re: Gary Smulyan

I would've loved to go along. Unescapable rehearsal last night.

Any salient points that you could share with us?

Plenty of ideas yesterday. A couple of things popping in my mind are:
1- Having access to too much material will not make us memorize things
2- James Moody, at the top of his career, was still practising slow major scales for hours
3- Mr. Smulyan has a metal wedge in his Link

The latest issue (November / December 2012) of Saxophone Journal has a interview with Gary Smulyan.

Interesting article.

Of course everyone likes a free masterclass:thumb:

Masterclass

Last night I went to sax.co.uk for the Gary Smulyan masterclass. Excellent, what a player. Thanks to all at sax.co.uk for hosting it. Well worth the chilly ride across the Ashdown Forest. :thumb:

Only down side is that know I'm all the more certain I want a low Bb bari again.:w00t:

Re: Masterclass

Was he playing on a low Bb horn ? The recent Saxophone Journal article says he plays a pre-war Conn 12M.

Yes, that was the one. In fact, it's his only sax. Personally I find that very strange........

Strange because he only plays baritone, or because he manages without a low A or because he trusts his professional career to a horn that is so old and might be at risk of breaking or wearing out ?

Rhys

PS Note to Kev/Pete - should this thread be combined with the other one on the same Gary Smulyan masterclass ?

He said he prefers low Bb horns and low A is not that essential. "play it up an octave and nobody will notice"

Re: Masterclass

:)))

Seriously?
I guess he is probably talking as a soloist more than as a section player.

I know that if I were playing gigs as a jazz soloist I wouldn't want a low A horn (weight reasons more than sound). For a big band or horn section gig that low A would be very important.

Nope. Just strange that anyone would only own one sax.......

Hah ! You're talking my language now.

But maybe he has found the one true horn for him. I'm on the search for mine, but just can't let go of any of the ones that don't play themselves when I pick them up.
