Funny Happenings in the Town of Myrtle Creek

So, the funniest thing happened to me today.

I was being a good little sax player and practicing, and I have lately been working on recovering my altissimo range.

It was about 10:00am when I started playing. I was working on overtones, and at about 10:30 I heard a knock on the door. So I set my sax down, and I answered it.

It was a police officer. He informed me that I was playing too loud too early. He said that I would have to wait until 2:30pm before I could start practicing again.

Apparently I broke the noise ordinance.

But what business does he have telling me when I can and can't play? Besides, it was 10:00!!!!! It's not that early!!!

First I thought the title of your thread was an ad for a new horror movie!
Noise Ordinance? Well, having a quasi-legal background, the first thing I would do would be to look up the Noise Ordinance to see exactly what it says. In the UK apart from aircraft noise abatement and not sounding your car horn or letting off fireworks between certain night time hours I dont think we have specific blanket noise bans; it's just unreasonable behaviour or else civil nuisance.

Personally, I think that if 12 O'clock mid-day was good enough for Jelly Roll Morton's Dead Man Blues, then 10am is not too early for a little individual sax practice.

Hmm...

They do things differently over there.

Mind you, altissimo practice at 10 in the morning? I don't know how you can stand it, let alone anyone else.

Turns out that our noise ordinance is from 10PM to 6AM. NOT 10:30AM!!! 🙁 And they say that I have to wait till 2:30. That doesn't give me enough to fill my 4 hour a day quota!! There's no way that I'm going to have a productive rehearsal today, I'll be a bit angry at my neighbors!

This sounds like a case of your neighbours having a cop as a friend, and not going through official channels. Take a copy of the ordinance, and if it happens again (the same cop) show him the paperwork and get his name and number, explaining that you want to check it out. I bet you won't see his backside for dust >:)
