Front E and F problem with PPT

I've got a PPT 8* and I'm finding it very hard to achieve front E and F at all. On the other hand, with my #9 metal Yani, it's pretty straightforward as long as I get my throat shape right. I'm now playing with a "no-lip-over" embouchure and can get the bell notes easily on the PPT with a small and expected amount of extra reed support (moving the lower jaw forward), but the front E and F just don't want to play ball unless I provide even more reed support, which seems completely wrong.

On the other hand, it's overtone city with a low Bb fingering: I've never reached further than the 4th harmonic with the Yani, possibly because it's not an edgy piece, but with the PPT the harmonics are just popping out with changes in my throat. I was laughing because it was that good.

Anyway, what could I be doing wrong with front E and F? I'm playing with the same Legere Sig 2 reed that I use on my Yani.

try slightly less mouthpiece in your mouth. You may also need to go up a touch on the reed stiffness.

I've not got too much of the piece in my mouth at the moment, but I'll check again I could try a 2.25 Legere Sig.

I've ordered a 2.25 Legere Sig. As it happens, I was thinking of moving up a notch anyway. I can always exchange it for a 2.5 if I need to.


I noticed a comment in this thread about difficulties with altissimo with a Baritone PPT. Anyone else got issues with a PPT and the altissimo register (starting at front E)?

Looks like my ligature wasn't tight enough, which caused all the squeaking...

I'm sure moving up a 1/4 strength won't harm things either.
