I was watching flog it and was roused from my stupor by an alto sax,which a lady had bought in to sell.The "expert" who advised her was a specialist in treen-wood in layman's language. He advised the punter it might be worth £80, and suggested she put this reserve on the horn.By this time I was screaming and swearing at the "expert" to say who had made the b***y thing.In the event the sax sold for £500-still don't know who made it.It played,because the lady who sold it played a tune of sorts on it. Maddening or what !

I saw that and found it frustrating too. I thought I saw the name "A Sax" engraved on the bell, but could have been wrong. It looked like a '30s horn and seemed to be in pretty good condition. No discussion about brand/maker, model, serial number, accessories etc.

There were two determined bidders, and £500 is a lot of cash for a nothing horn, the lady said she wanted a sax with "modern keys" and the man she got it off was an Army player,so he must have known something.

I think that Selmer Paris bought the rights to the Adolphe Sax name and used it in the 20s and maybe early 30s. The horn certainly looked much newer than the period of Adolphe Sax's life.

Yes, they bought the company. After buying Sax junior out, there was a run of about 1300 saxes made with Sax's name on them. Had a new A Sax serial number range and Selmer serial numbers in small print. This was in the late twenties/thirties. My teacher's just bought one. Haven't seen it yet. He says it sounds very like a Selmer. Maybe this was one of those. Later there was also a run of supers stencilled A Sax.

I have played an A Sax silver alto to low B. My father owned one. I think it was made just around 1920. IMO, the right saxes to look for when it comes to this age are Evette Schaeffer and V. Kohlert & Söhne.

I can't believe they would try to value a sax without considering the make. It's a bit like saying some porcelain is a pot, or that a painting has been done by an artist.

Unfortunately I take the Enver Hoxa approach. When I see something on the TV which upsets me, I shoot it. Costs me a fortune in tellies.

i just watched this program on iplayer and all i can say is my alto is an old selmer cigar cutter and i wouldn't swap it for any amount of modern saxes modern key work or no!
