Now that we're into December I hope this post won't fall foul of the bah humbug brigade.

I confess to having a bit of a weakness for Christmas kitsch. Consequently I've been having a lot of fun playing along to "A Jazzy Christmas" (Wise Publications AM997854). It's around £12 or so for 12 well known Christmassy tunes that have been gently jazzed up. There's nothing here to frighten maiden aunts; think the Holly and the Ivy meets Kind of Blue.

I really like this book and CD. There's something here for everyone. A beginner with only a few months playing could probably make a reasonable go of the simpler carols. All the tunes are in straightforward keys, mainly C, D and F; with a few in A. The solos have been written out, but you'll need skill and fast fingers to play the more complex ones at the original tempi. The backing CD is very professionally done, I couldn't fault it. It sounds gorgeous. You get both a demonstration version and a play-along for each tune. Highly recommended, especially if like me you are a softy for this sort of thing.

I have Big in the kitchen for cooking music too :) Actually all of my cd's are in the kitchen.

That sounds like a good playalong Paul, thank you. I have an Aebersold one which does seem to take itself a little too seriously and has a slightly snobby line in the introduction about concealing "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" ' country roots under a bossa version. That version put me off bossa for a long time. I also have the Hal Leonard Christmas Real Book which is a lot more fun, albeit without backing tracks.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
