Exam Question

Hi not sure if posted this in correct area but here goes..I am thinking of doing some jazz grades this year, and wanted to know,do you have to take grades in area where your teacher lives.I take instruction from someone fifteen miles away, but about five miles away is a music school where they sit exams,so could i take exams at this school, thanks Bumnote and Happy New Year To All.

I think that with ABRSM you can take exams where you like - as an adult you can enter yourself (I did for my theory as my teacher said it would be easier, since she had no-one else wanting to take an exam that session).

I can ask tomorrow about Trinity Guildhall, as my teacher is the local co-ordinator.

I entered grade 1 myself, my teacher entered me for grade 2 at the centre she uses, and for grade 3 she entered me back at the centre I went to for grade 1.

The reason I got my teacher to enter me for grades 2 and 3 is that on my grade 1 certificate it says '...awarded to Nick Cook, presented by Nick Cook...'. Or words to that effect. On grades 2 and 3 my teacher's name appears.

Is that ABRSM Nick? My TG cert doesn't say presented by anyone!

The main problem with allthe Jazz Grades exams is that you can only sit them where they are held, and not all veues can justify holding certain exams. Urban area are likely to be bewtter served than rural areas. In Swansea I have sat some exams here but for others i have had to travel to Cardiff, some 43 miles away. I know that Paul Inglis would have to travel from IOM to the mainland for his exams. Soit is variable and depends on how many are wanting to sit exams at any one time.

There are 3 exam boards for Jazz Sax Grades - ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and London College of Music (Thames Valley University).

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
