Eric Alexander

I have most of the albums recorded by Eric Alexander. He inspires me to keep trying with his remarkable tone, creative and adventurous harmonic ideas, and remarkable sense of time. On his new album, CHICAGO FIRE, he and guest trumpet man Jeremy Pelt open the album with "Save Your Love For Me", playing it at a medium tempo and stretching the tune out from its ballad form into a blowing tune. "Blues for Vonski" is a tribute to Von Freeman with Alexander sounding great in terms of tone and blues phrasing. Eric just keeps getting better. He is inspiring to me.

Thanks Andy, he's a new name for me. When I searched You Tube Eric Alexander Chicago Fire I got lots of goals from a footballer of the same name (soccer) lol. Anyway just had a listen to Cheesecake and really liked it. I like the look of his website too, some interesting looking eBooks. Off to search spotify for the album now.

I saw him last year in a "Four Brothers"-like quartet. The two other tenor players were Harry Allen and Grant Stewart (who aren't bad either) and the bari sax was Gary Smulyan. I must say I was extremely impressed with Alexander's playing, despite having gone to the gig for Smulyan. Great tone and timing indeed. Haven't listened to his own stuff yet (plenty of things to listen to) but he's definitely on my list. Thanks for reminding me 🙂

I recommend SUNDAY IN NEW YORK to really get a sense of his sound. He plays "Like Someone In Love" as a ballad, and his command of his horn and it's timbre is inspiring.

He is definitely a BEAST! I highly recommend his EPIC sax battle with Vincent Herring from live at Smoke. Great album.

Full album is called The Battle: Live at Smoke

Have you heard any of the "Reeds and Deeds" albums. Eric and Grant Stewart together. Very good.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
