Accessories Cebulla Strap Questions

I'm thinking of ordering a Cebulla strap and have a couple of questions. (I tried contacting the UK site, but didn't get a response.) I'm a beginner and got my tenor about a month ago, and am finding the supplied strap pretty uncomfortable.

My thoughts are to get the plastic hook and the wide adjuster. I'm less sure about the leather - is there any difference in terms of stretch or breaking-in period between the brown and black?

My main question is about length. My current strap measures 53cm to the end of the hook. I"m 5'10" and collar size about 17. I'm not sure if the Cebulla length is the maximum or some middling position. Although I have a tenor at the moment, I'm thinking that it would be good if the strap could also suit an alto should I want to give that a try - but I don't know how much adjustment is available...

Would the 57cm be adjustable to match my current strap with ther tenor?
Would it have further adjustment to work with an alto? (Would I need further adjustment?)
Alternatively, would the 52cm strap have some adjustment to make it a bit longer?

Welcome to the Café I haven't got experience of the cebulla strap but please do say hi in the doorbell section of the forum🙂

I bought one of the earlyer Cebulas and to be honest found it pretty dire, great idea and well made but the metal neck slider constantly, well slides up and down as the mood takes it! The padded neck part is ok but i find it a bit sweaty after a while.
For these reasons i've never really used it apart from practicing at home a bit, i did recently drill a 5th hole in the slider to stop it moving around and fitted para-cord in place of the standard stuff.
Personally i prefer the bog standard cheap BG strap but if you want something like a Cebula why not get a Just-Joe's gel strap they look pretty good.

The Cebulla length is the maximum. A 52cm strap wouldn't go any longer than 52cm.

Thanks all.

The wide adjuster is made of some kind of industrial plastic which might have a bit more friction than the small (plastic coated) metal one. The different shapes might have an effect on friction as well. Either way, if it really becomes necessary to add holes to increase friction, it has the space to do that. So, I have no real concerns about the adjuster slipping (whether or not I need to modify it).

Good to know the quoted number is the max length. I think my concern regarding length is whether it can be adjusted to be short enough. However, having just looked more closely at the photos on the (.de) web site, I see that the cord passes through eyelets in the leather and is then sewn onto itself. I can operate a needle and thread, as well as tie knots, so I think it makes sense to order the 62cm and I can shorten it if need be.

Any thoughts on the leather? I presume there is little stretch, but what about stiffness? I seem to recall reading somewhere that the brown is a bit stiffer - does it need more time to break in? (It's not clear to me why the brown leather costs more than the black unless it's a different kind/spec of leather.)

If you can work out what length the strap is that you are using, you can order one custom made to your length.

I have a Cebulla for my Alto and Sop, and had it made to the length I wanted - all normal neck straps are too long for me, so even with them pulled up to the point of choking me, the sax is not high enough to reach my mouth.

Try contacting Johann directly, he usually replies immediately.

And I have a leather one, very comfortable.

The main Cebulla web site does give instructions in English on how to measure.

I've got three straps. And use them for alto and Sop. I converted to Jazzlabs sax holder for Bari and tenor, as it keeps the weight off my neck better than the Cebulla bari strap.
The slipping problem was sorted out a long time ago. None of mine slip.
The sweaty aspect is covered by the recommendation in the instruction to wear something under the strap, i.e. it shouldn't go on bare skin.
Wide adjuster - certainly helps, but not really needed unless you go to tenor or bari. This doesn't slip, even with a bari hanging off it.
Stretch - not an issue, it's negligible as you guesed.
Stiffness - The black ones are softer at first. But the brown ones aren't over stiff and soon soften up.

My tenor strap with the wide adjuster doesn't slip at all. I can use it on tenor and alto, although it is at the top of it's adjustment on alto.
One push more and it throttles me. Luckily my missus doesn't know this.

Thanks again, folks. I'll go with the brown leather delixe version, methinks. Still no response from the UK distributor, so I've written to Johann to see what 's hapenning.

Jeanette, yes, I've considered the saxholder, but would prefer to first try a strap (one that's substantially better than the rather nasty webbing thing that came with the sax). Rightly or wrongly, I think there's something to be said for trying stuff for yourself and finding out what works. For me, as a rank beginner, I'm pretty sure that a strap will be fine because the sax isn't used for extended periods - my embouchure doesn't last that long (turns to rubber after 15 minutes, maybe 20 max), so it's on and off the stand regularly.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
