Back in the early 80s I was at a drinks party with (mostly) Americans. I was asked what I thought the main difference was between Brits and Americans. Having had a few beers and needing a quick response , I saw no reason to hold back, so I said "The length of their trousers."

Stunned silence and a quick change of subject. But it was true - look at any movie of the 60s and 70s and you'll see that i) they all wear porkpie hats (sorry Ben - you're still my idol) and ii) their trousers are up around mid-calf.
