Cafe Blues Recording (collaboration) 2017 2024

Many thanks Pete. That must have been a lot of work.

It is tricky to make it all sound sort of cohesive. I used no EQ except a bit high pass filter on Rhys to compensate for what sounds like microphone proximity, I used some light compression on everyone except mrpeebee which already sounded quite compressed (it was actually peaking a lot bit didn't seem distorted)

Thanks for making the mix Pete, sounding very good in my ears 🙂.

My take as forwarded to you didn't have any effects. It was recorded on the lowest possible mic input of my USB mic, but still had a lot of peaking. I normally just have to amplify it with a negative value in Audacity before I mix it was a backing, when doing the mix myself.

Interesting stuff @Pete Thomas The mic I use is an Electrovoice RE 27 N/D which is an updated version of the RE 20, which itself is very popular for saxophone.

Both RE 20 and RE27 designs have "Variable-D" for minimal proximity effect. But the RE27 does have a marked uplift (up to 6dB) in its frequency curve from about 2kHz upwards. I use one of the three "roll off switches" to reduce that high frequency rise.

But I often hear quite a marked and nasty tone on the higher notes when recording any of my saxes. Either that is me and my basic sound, or can I blame the microphone ?
