BOTM BOTM June 2016 "My Romance"

Ok, wanted to get another one up b4 the end, so recorded the SOTM, then this straight after. Not too sure what it's like, felt ok but I'll have a listen after to see 🙂

...bought my sax after a couple of lessons. I had been mulling it over in my mind for several years beforehand.
I always wanted to play Sax, when it got to my 40th bday I just though if I don't do it now, then I'll probably never do it. I then stuck it in the attic for 10 years, and got it out for a month every couple of years after that. It's now been out the attic for I think about 3 months, which is by far the longest it's ever been down.

I always dreamed and romanticised about it and wished I could play it but thought i'd left it too late to learn. It reached a point finally when I looked online for a teacher and asked him straight out, was I too old to learn.. His reply couldn't have been better and it's thanks to him that I decided to go for it 🙂 I'm so glad I did.

Ok just got home from work and decided to do one more take on this, first effort 30 seconds after putting the sax together 🙂

I really enjoyed listening to that, your tone is very nice.

I was concentrating so hard on your sax playing that I didn't notice.
Going back to what you said about your sax being in the attic for ten years, well it's frightening how quickly time passes without being aware of it. Ten miserable years passed me by while life just continued with its routine and expectations, putting my needs at the bottom of the pile and I suddenly woke up and realised that I couldn't allow another ten or twenty to do the same.

Well, I only noticed coz the first time I played it, I couldn't work out were to start...took me about 3 goes before I realised that the first bit had gone missing 🙂 Normally I have time to press record, then have a drink of coffee, then it's about time to start playing, but this time when I put the coffee cup down I just didn't recognise where the backing track was. I was trying to remember how big a drink I usually take to get the timing right but in the end I had to do it without a drink at all 🙂

Yeah, it's almost funny. I really did buy my Sax for my 40th thinking I was going to be too old if I didn't do it then, and then I really did stick it in the attic for 10 years 🙂 Then I took it down for a couple of weeks every couple of years since then.

I also built a brick BBQ for my 40th Party, actually I built it the day before the party with some old bricks, intending to knock it down and re-do it with nice new bricks the week after...it's still up and in regular use 15 years later 🙂...and yes, I still intend to knock it down and rebuild it next week 🙂

Just wanted to say a big thanks to Alice for hosting the BOTM thread🙂 As yes it's that time again.
It's never easy hosting these threads as you never know how your choice of ballad will go down. This month has been a great Ballad with a great response, so thanks you guys for posting versions 🙂 Next months host has been picked and the ballad is right up there with the classics🙂

Chris..

It has been great fun and I'm so glad I was asked 🙂
Thank you to everyone who has contributed here, I've loved listening to all of the tracks you've made and have discovered new (old) artists to listen to as well which is brilliant.

It is so fun to hear and follow your musical progress. That was lovely. The strong points are playing in good time and control of the tone. I heard just a little bit of sharpness which is easily corrected. At this point in this tune now that the basics are so well covered, you might work to give the melody a bit more contour with your dynamics.

The way to do this is to ascertain the most important note in each phrase, crescendo going to that note and decrescendo as you leave the note. Hint: The note to be stressed in the phrase is often the highest tone, but not always. There can be exceptions.

I used to teach my band students that learning music to perform is like peeling an onion. You master the first layer, peel that away, and there is always the next layer to work on, and the next, and the next, and so on.

(This last paragraph is "low hanging fruit" for Targa to make a crying joke.)

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
