Hello Folks !

@nigeld was kind enough to offer me the choice of Ballad of the Month for April.

There are so many Jazz ballads I truly love, but I actually have chosen a song which seems to have been covered quite rarely; and one which I had hoped someday to actually arrange into a small combo ballad myself......"Beautiful Things" ....from the movie/play "Dr. Dolittle" (performed in the film by Anthony Newly).

Now...interesting thing here is we were both debating as to whether this should actually be a BOTM or SOTM...simply because while the original recordings seem to be ballad-esque, when actually put to a metronome they are somewhat faster tempo'd than they initially seem.

So, @nigeld was kind enough to produce & provide backing tracks at 2 different tempos...so the choice is yours, or try both. 😎

I love this version... how dreamy..... 🙂

I've never heard this before, or seen the film. When he sings on the official record it is much better because he loses the "cockney" accent. It was recorded in 1967 and I can feel that certain vibe in the organ and flutes which makes me thing of Sgt.Pepper.

Really ? Never had heard it ? It's an interesting song, eh ?

It's kinda dreamy, yeah good descriptor - but also some of the note/chord choices seem kinda dark and shadowy to me. The melody never struck me as just the sorta typical musical fare.
Maybe that in intself is why it always seemed to me to be slower and more ballady than the metronome shows it to actually be.

I agree about that "dark and shadowy", probably another reason that I like it.

Eh! What? Pardon.
