I've played this song a couple of times at jams and the head has never sounded right. It turns out the live version I have of Monk playing this song wasn't the best source to learn from ... especially as there's no sax playing what is the accepted version of the melody.

It wasn't until I found a score on Google that I realised just how wrong I'd been doing it. It sounded great playing along to the Monk version I had, rather less pleasant when playing along with any one else. ;)

This is also my first recording in my new studio - or garden shed as I believe they're also known - at my new home. It's a one take affair, that I think sounds okay although the acoustics of the studio are dramatically different to my old spot, which is going to take some time getting used to, especially when mixing and EQing.

Nope. I'll either have to play really quickly so that hypothermia doesn't have enough time to kick in.

Or move to the south of France.

    Decisions, decisions. ;)

France. You know it makes sense. Quick, while you still can.

It would take more than Boris Johnson to stop me moving. ;)

For a week or so I thought Marine Le Pen would, though, but thankfully the French didn't let the world down in the end. :thumb:

There are so many really great versions, although Charlie Rouse has become one of my favourite players at the moment. I'd never heard the Art Blakey version, though - I really like that.

I love that tune. Reminds me of slow Sunday afternoons in my youth (in the south of France). None of us played any instruments, but me dad played his jazz records back then. Switched to classical in the 70s!

By the way, thanks for these versions. All great. Can't pick a favorite.

    And Veggie man, you rock!

When I finally move over I hope you'll be joining me in a jam session or two? :D

Absolutely! I love jam, except trafic jam. By then I may have retired and most importantly made some progress.

I had a go at Blue Monk today for fun.

Actually, this isn't the only version of Blue Monk that's been posted recently. I think the other one may have been lost as it's in one of the blues threads, which I think is a shame as @Francisco is coming along leaps and bounds as a blues player and really deserves a little encouragement.

So, here's a little shout out:

    Nice!,

I don't know if Sahib Shihab did this with Monk, He recorded a lot with him it would be worth a look.

    Never heard of him before.

Liked the rhythmic variance you put into the head there, particularly second time through. Soloing is sounding pretty competent and confidenct. You ended a couple of phrases on notes, that if I played them would have been mistakes, but then when I listened back later I would have liked them (but they were still mistakes or "happy accidents") . Anyway, if you're hitting them deliberately (and I'm assuming you are) then kudos to you 'cos they sounded proper jazz! :) The only thing I'd say is to try to swing your semis a bit more strongly.

They were intentional. Whether they're right or not is another matter entirely. :D

Yeah, I really haven't got that strong swing feel. I'm working on it, but it is a weakness I'm struggling to overcome.
