Two things happened today which surprised me...
It was first orchestra rehearsal this morning of the New Year. I play alto sax in the beginners' orchestra at 9. We got a new piece - an arrangement of the finale of Dvorak symphony no. 9. Surprise #1: I arrived to discover one of the clarinet players sporting an alto sax, which she's decided to have a go at. This meant that I got 1st alto sax part, as there were two!. Jeepers, it was tough and HIGH - lots of top C, D, and E. Nice to get the main tune though
I was surprised how much assistance I was able to offer the new player.
Surprise # 2. In main orchestra I play cello. We started off for the first hour running the opening movement of Mozart symphony 41 (Jupiter). This is the full version, not an arrangement. I went to collect new music for the second part of the rehearsal during the coffee break and got given TWO parts - cello, and Alto sax part with solo . Another colleague (violins) got the same shock, except for tenor sax. The music? That would be Henry Mancinci - Pink Panther...
The arrangement seems to have both of us soloing... eek - I'd better practice...
