Brass Bauhaus Cornets

Hi,

My daughter has been learning to play the Cornet for about 18 Months on a Music school provided Hanson Bb Cornet. We are thinking of buying her an intermediate Cornet so she can progress and looking at the options I noticed that Bauhaus also produce cornets. having been really please with my M2 Tenor I was wondering if anyone has any experience of their cornets and if they are as good as the saxes they make.

There are lots of good cornets out there, the industry standard would be the yamaha series, I have not played a bauhaus so can't comment, my friends locally really rate jupiter brass instruments. Maybe you could ask her teacher for a recommendation.

I'd recommend the John Packer/Smith-Watkins Cornets on the link here: http://www.johnpacker.co.uk/Catalogue/JP-Instruments/Trumpets-Cornets-Flugels (read the reviews of the JP271SW). I have the JP171SW, which my 11yo daughter uses - the series is excellent - all depends how much you want to pay. I am aware of the BW from review only but would recommend giving Martin a ring/email at Woodwind and Brass for some honest feedback. Do you have a set budget?

I play a Weril Regium II Cornet which is one of the best under £1,000, and can be found at John Myatt for less than £600; http://myatt.co.uk/shop/home.php?cat=1748 . Most teachers will recommend Yamahas or Vincent Bach, and not know much beyond. Both can be pricey for what they are - the better ones are the pro standard(6 series +), the student ones I am not that impressed by (2 & 4 SERIES).

Tom, Thanks for the great advice, My daughters teacher has come back recommending the John Packer range of cornets as well as Yamaha, so I'll take a look at the JP range.

I have tried said trumpet which had a good sound, but it had a sticky valve and I swapped it for a JP/Rath Trombone (already had 4 trumpets!).

I've had no problems with my trumpet - in fact it plays very well.

In the link above scroll down to post 6 by Rapier and he/she refer to somebody purchasing the John Packer cornet...

Here in NZ the John Packer brand is sold under the Vivace name...
