I love Venuti and Lang. Their music inspired Django and I think Venuti's playing far outweighs Grappelli's for attack and invention. Add to that Adrian Rollini's bass sax and you've got some serious music.

Venuti was a bit of a lad apparently. He once arranged a plate of salad around his (cough,cough) and served it to a woman at a supper party, and he played a whole series of tunes to a brothel full of madams.
It gives a whole new meaning to swing music.

I heard Billy Connolly claim the salad stunt.

One of Joe's alledged practical jokes, was to call all the Double bass players he new to bring their instruments to a meeting in a small cafe overlooked by his hotel room. About 20 turned up.
